New in this week - MotoCaddy M1

Ladies Yorkshire Foursomes Final.

Last week we played host to the Ladies Yorkshire Foursomes Final. With 50+ pairs reaching the final our very own Vicky Mathers and Karen Jobling were eventual winners with a gross score of 78 (Nett 70.5).

The pair were first out and the last pairing out was 2:30, so a tantalising wait in which they did not anticipate they would be in contention, so a great achievement and eventually won by a shot and a half to be crowned Yorkshire county Foursomes champions, Well done Vicky & Karen.

A special mention to Vicky who has had series of lessons with me over the past few weeks, she had a nett 68 the week before and now this superb victory with Karen.

Senior's Club Championship

On Saturday we hosted the first club senior’s championship, played in some tough conditions as we experienced some strong winds and the scores certainly reflected this.

Darrell Stansfield, Ivan Rookes and Albert Nowicki were the only three under par for their rounds with a nett 69 and will play off on Saturday 15th September to determine the winner.

Falklands Trophy

34 pairs took to the course on Sunday played as a 4BBB medal. 3 pairs topped the leader board and will now have to play off to determine the winner.

New member Alistair Bruce & Club captain Nigel Stanwix along with Steve Brown / Gary Catt and Dave Stonehouse / Keith Barker all finished on scores of 61, well done to you all.

Hole In One Alert

Thursday in the Toffs, Chris Lamb holed out on the 4th from 180yds to achieve his 2nd ever hole in one, well done Chris.

This is open to visitors as well paying a slightly reduced green fee. The event is sponsored by Callaway, there are lots of prizes on offer and will also be a beat the pro challenge, and a chance to win a NEW DRIVER on the day.

The art of persistence

The FedExCup Playoffs get underway this Thursday at the Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey - although Rory McIlroy has already confirmed he won’t be taking part. The world no. 7 has taken a few weeks off in order to recharge the batteries after a disappointing showing at the PGA Championship earlier this month.

Justin Rose, who is currently fourth in the FedExCup standings, leads the British charge and will be aiming to pip Dustin Johnson to the number one spot. That being said, recent PGA Championship and U.S. Open winner Brooks Koepka is in fine form and could be the man to beat in this year's grand finale.

Closer to home, there was a feel-good story over the weekend as Paul Waring, on his 200th attempt, finally won on the European Tour. It wasn’t easy, but he managed to hold his nerve in a play-off against South African Thomas Aiken to win the Nordea Masters. It’s a great lesson for all of us in the art of persistence and determination when it comes to golf; if you keep on working on your game, it will eventually pay off.

Pick a time, any time

Let’s face facts: improving your wedge play is going to help your scores and lower your handicap. Rather than trying to guess how hard or long you need to swing to hit a specific yardage, we recommend having three distances that you can hit with each wedge. To do this try and learn the clock technique we’ve described below.

9 o'clock swing
The first position to master is where your arms point to 9 o’clock at the end of your backswing, as shown above. It should then mirror this on your forward swing to ensure consistent distances, finishing around 4 o’clock.

10 o'clock swing
Next, learn your average carry yardage for each wedge with a backswing position that reaches 10 o’clock and a forward swing that finishes at 3 o’clock. This is similar to a three-quarter swing and will help to flight shots.

11 o'clock swing
Finally, take each of your wedges and find out your average carry distance with a full backswing. This shot will fly the highest of the three techniques we’ve just explained and roll out the least.
